About

I bought this domain to host some files and created this site to organize some of my notes. Moving around constantly, and living in Juba, has meant that I've had to put my books -- the only things I've ever really owned -- into storage and do without references. To avoid moving entirely outside of quotation marks I've been relying on books that I can be found on-line, scans sent from SAD, and the papers that I've found rummaging around in the South Sudan national archives in Juba.

The Sudan Archive at Durham (SAD) has digitized the Intelligence Report, Egypt (IRE), (published by the Egyptian Army from 1891 to 1898), the Sudan Intelligence Report (SIR) from 1892 to 1903, Sudan Government Gazettes, staff lists, the 1:250000 series maps covering Sudan and South Sudan, Wingate's papers, and many other sources.

The University of Khartoum "DSpace" Repository has many dissertations, reports, and papers.

Forced Migration Online's Digital Library includes a large collection of unpublished reports, conference papers, publications, and other "gray literature" on South Sudan.

The Bergen University Library has digitized some of its special collections, including parts of the Mahmoud Salih collection.

The Sudan Open Archive is a database of books and documents that was originally created to hold the records of Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS). Nowadays it holds the first thirty-two volumes of Sudan Notes & Records and is still the best place on the internet to find the "gray literature" of Sudan and South Sudan.

Archive.org is probably the place for keyword searchable texts out of copyright.

Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Online has lots of photos of Sudan and South Sudan.

The AUC Rare Books and Special Collections Digital Library holds The Sphinx: English Illustrated Weekly, a weekly English language magazine published in Cairo during the tourist season (November to April) from 1892 to 1947, which has a gossipy society section on Sudan. The digital collection has issues from 1905 to the 1920s.

The ETH Zürich Bibliothek Image Archive has extensive digitized holdings on aviation and other topics. The Foundation Luftbild Schweiz Archive (1918–2011) contains aerial photographs taken by Walter Mittelholzer, who flew over South Sudan.

This page contains a list of dissertations concerning South Sudan.

The Conflict Sensitivity Resource Facility (CSRF), South Sudan, maintains a useful research repository.
